Becoming an oral surgeon?
I am a senior in high school and my dream job is to be an oral surgeon. I will be attending the University of Michigan for my undergrad next year and then I hope to attend dental school and then do an oral surgery residency. I am smart and I work very had, but I am not a natural science genius like some people. If anyone has gone through dental school or is in it right now, I just wanted to know if this is a realistic option for me and exactly how competitive it is. Thanks so much!
You don’t have to be a genius in science to come out okay. Try to get an average gpa of at least 3.6. Do well on not only your dental admission exam, but more important, the interview you will have. Usually about 1 in 40 are accepted. After the 4 years it will take to obtain your DDS degree it will again be competitive to get into an oral surgery residency program. While in dental school, develop a relationship with the head of the oral surgery department and have either him or another professor you like, be your mentor and help you gain acceptance into a program. It is a tough road but with determination you will do just fine and will see it was well worth the effort. good luck in your future career.
